Corona Virus Closure-Week 7 (18.5.20)

Sycamore Class Blog Week 7

Hi Sycamore Class,

I hope you have had a lovely weekend despite the changing weather. This will be your final weekly blog for this half term, and the good news is you won’t have any work over the May half term holiday. I know this half term has been challenging with getting used to a new way of working. I want you to know I am extremely proud of you all for adapting so quickly and the quality of work you have been sending me. During the holiday, I want you to rest, make sure you spend quality time with your families and create memories together.

Last week’s ‘Star of the Week’ certificate was awarded to Layla.  Over the past few weeks she has really impressed me with the quality of work and her effort at the last minute to help us win our TTRockstar battle against Maple Class. Well done Layla, keep up the hard work!

This week, you will be moving on to a new unit of work in English and exploring persuasive advertisements. For Maths, you will continue with your TTRS, Schofield and Sims challenges as well as continuing fractions. For history we are going to investigate  the lives of evacuees.

There is also an exciting competition from Mrs Michelle Smith about our very own Swansfield in Bloom competition. Unfortunately, Alnwick in Bloom will not be taking place this year but Mrs Smith still wanted the children of Swansfield Park to get creative and have some fun. See the attached overview at the bottom of the page - good luck Sycamore Class!

Work to submit this week:

This week we would like you to submit your Persuasive Advertisement (English) and your Evacuee Letter (Humanities) by Monday 25th May.  I will then provide each of you with some personal feedback.

English Advertising Unit:

This week you are going to be looking at advertising and how they try to persuade people to do something or buy something. There are three PowerPoints for you to work through, each one looking at different advertisements and persuasive devices. There are tasks for you to complete as you go through each lesson.

There is an accompanying worksheet for lesson one, you can either print this off or just write your answers down on a piece of paper. For lesson three, there is also a worksheet that can either be printed off or you can complete it on your computer. You will need to complete these three lessons before doing this week‘s writing task. As always, if you have any questions regarding your English tasks, please just get in touch.

Writing Task: Submitted task

This week you are going to create either a magazine or television advertisement persuading people to buy a product of your creation, either a new drink, food product, toy or item of clothing. There is a PowerPoint for you to follow and this will guide you through the process and explain the task in detail.

I would then like you to email a final version of your advertisement to me for feedback. You must complete the three lessons on advertising before completing this task.

- Please email this task to me by 25.05.20.

Maths

This week, we are continuing with our fractions work by looking at number sequences, comparing, ordering, adding and subtracting them.

I have uploaded 3 PowerPoints, one for each lesson. Please work through them in order.

- Lesson 1: Number sequences

- Lesson 2: Comparing and ordering fractions

- Lesson 3: Adding and subtracting fractions

Make sure you have a pencil and paper handy to work through the PowerPoint, just like we do in class. You don’t have any pages to complete in your photocopied maths booklet this week. I have also uploaded a fractions knowledge mat to help you.

In addition to these three PowerPoint lessons, I would also like you to do the following Maths tasks:

Schofield and Sims: Complete the next page in your book, totalling ten completed pages to date.

Times Table Rock Stars: Studio Challenge - 10 games.

Humanities

This week we are going to continue to study the events of World War II by investigating who evacuees were. Please read through the PowerPoint. There are 2 tasks to work through.

Task 1: Is to decide which items a child evacuee would put into their evacuation suitcase and what things they would not put in the suitcase.

Task 2: To write a letter as an evacuee. Please email me a copy of this task.
