Coronavirus Closure - Week 7 (18.05.20)

Hi Larch Class,

Note - The English lesson 3 PowerPoint and accompanying worksheet have been changed this evening (Sunday), please use this new version.

I hope you’ve all had a lovely weekend and have enough energy left for one last week of home learning tasks before a well-deserved half term break. You’ll be pleased to hear that we won’t be setting you any work next week. Throughout the last two months, you have all worked so incredibly hard and adapted to this new way of working so well. I’m proud of each and every one of you and can’t thank you enough for your levels of engagement and motivation. I really do want you to have some fun with your family next week as well as find some time to relax and recharge those batteries. Enjoy Larch Class!

Last week’s ‘Star of the Week’ certificate was awarded to Lily. Her creative approach to our Home Learning tasks has been fabulous! She has created a wonderful Adobe Spark video in celebration of VE Day, written a series of diary entries to showcase her knowledge of St George as well as created some very informative presentations about Fossils and Evolution. Well done Lily!

This week, you will be moving on to a new unit of work in English and exploring persuasive advertisements. For Maths, you will continue with your Arithmetic, TTRS, Schofield and Sims challenges as well as deepen your understanding of the written methods used for multiplication and division. Mr Rose has also created a series of activities for you all about Evacuees. 

I have also attached some information from Mrs Michelle Smith about our very own Swansfield in Bloom competition. Unfortunately, Alnwick in Bloom will not be taking place this year but Mrs Smith still wanted the children of Swansfield Park to get creative and have some fun. Work to submit this week:

This week we would like you to submit your Persuasive Advertisement (English) and your Evacuee Letter (Humanities) by Monday 25th May. We will then provide each of you with some personal feedback. English (From Mrs O’Connell) - Year 5 and Year 6 are doing the same work this week

Advertising Unit:

This week you are going to be looking at advertising and how they try to persuade people to do something or buy something. There are three PowerPoints for you to work through, each one looking at different advertisements and persuasive devices. There are tasks for you to complete as you go through each lesson.

There is an accompanying worksheet for lesson one, you can either print this off or just write your answers down on a piece of paper. For lesson three, there is also a worksheet that can either be printed off or you can complete it on your computer. You will need to complete these three lessons before doing this week‘s writing task. As always, if you have any questions regarding your English tasks, please just get in touch with Mrs O’Connell.

Year 5 & 6 Writing Task:

This week you are going to create either a magazine or television advertisement persuading people to buy a product of your creation, either a new drink, food product, toy or item of clothing. There is a PowerPoint for you to follow and this will guide you through the process and explain the task in detail. I would then like you to email a final version of your advertisement to me for feedback - Please email this task to Mrs O’Connell by 25.05.20.

Maths (From Mrs Murdy) Year 5 and Year 6 are exploring the same mathematical focus this week, just using different PowerPoint resources (Bees / Beetles).

This week, we are all moving on to a new unit of work: ‘Multiplication and Division’.

I’ve created a series of three lessons for you all focusing upon the following areas:

- Lesson 1: Division

- Lesson 2: Division

- Lesson 3: Long Multiplication

I would like you to work your way through the attached PowerPoints. Each PowerPoint represents one lesson. As in previous weeks, these resources are just like the inputs that we would complete together as a whole class in our Maths lessons, starting with a ‘Warm Up Challenge’ followed by some information slides, key questions and finally the details of your independent tasks and some tricky mastery questions.

I’m more than happy for you to work through the Maths PowerPoints and record your answers on a piece of paper, you don’t have to print them.

You don’t have any pages to complete in your photocopied maths booklet this week. Once you have worked through the ‘warm-up’ challenges and ‘teacher input’ slides in each of the three PowerPoints, you’ll find the questions for your independent tasks at the end of each of the PowerPoints. Please record your answers to these questions on a piece of paper, making sure that you date and title each piece.

In addition to these three PowerPoint lessons, I would also like you to do the following Maths tasks:

- Arithmetic: Complete the next page / side in your photocopied booklet (one side)

- Schofield and Sims: Complete the next page in your book, totalling ten completed pages to date.

- Times Table Rock Stars: Studio Challenge - 10 games.

Humanities (From Mr Rose):

This week we continue to study the events of World War II. Please look through the attached PowerPoint and work through the thinking and reading activities. There are three tasks to complete - you only need to send Task 3 to Mr Rose for feedback:

Task 1: Describe and explain what would go into your suitcase (you could draw your items too)

Task 2: Answer the questions with your (imaginary!) thinking hats on!

Task 3: Write an evacuee letter - Please email this task to Mr Rose by 25.05.20
