Home Learning Spring Term

These are the home learning activities for the Spring Term.

Home Learning Information

Reading
Each week, children will be loaned a book from our reading scheme. Please send a book bag with them each day to carry these to and from school.
We would be grateful if you could:
  • Encourage your child to read these books with you at home;
  • Make a comment or sign your child's reading record to let us know that they have read and how they managed;
  • Send their reading books and reading records with them to school each day in a book bag.
As well as a reading scheme book, your child will have free choice of a book from the school library each week.

Spellings
Spellings will be set and tested each Friday. Please encourage your child to practise these regularly – little and often is usually the most effective method for long-term learning.

Due to the way we teach reading, sometimes different children may have different spellings at different times! Your child should know which spelling group they are in. If they aren't sure, drop me a message and I'll let you know.

Homework
Each Friday, your child will usually be given a short home learning task to be completed before the following Friday.

As well as this, please practise times tables and number facts regularly with your child at home. By the end of year two, children are expected to know the number facts for the 2, 5 and 10 times tables.

Online Resources
As part of our blended learning approach (face-to-face and online), we often use these online resources:
If you need or have forgotten your password for any of these, please let me know!

Many thanks,

Mr J

Spellings
This week, your spellings are a little bit trickier! I've only given you 5 for the test, but I've added some other words with the same sound in them that you can look at as well (I just won't test you on these ones).
The sound is a /zh/ sound (we practised saying this in school, grown ups, so hopefully they'll remember) made by the letter s.

Will be tested:
television
treasure
division
measure
usual

Won't be tested:
vision
pleasure
occasion
usually
leisure

Homework
For your homework this week, I'd like you to do some research on and create a poster or leaflet about any animal you like. It might be your favourite animal, it might be one you know a lot about already or it might be one that you'd like to know more about.
Your poster needs to include:
  • The group which the animal belongs to (mammal, reptile, amphibian, bird, fish, invertebrate).
  • The animals habitat (where it lives and gets the things it needs to survive).
  • What it eats (carnivore, herbivore or omnivore - you might want to give some examples too).
  • Any special features of the animal that help it to survive (camouflage, blubber, long neck etc).
  • At least one more interesting fact about your animal.
EDIT: A few people have told me they've struggled to get this homework done as they'd had a busy week, so I'm happy if you want to bring it in after the holidays.

Thanks,
Mr J

Homework
We've been learning how to count money in maths this week. For your homework, I'd like you to complete an activity on Busy Things that involves ordering different amounts of money.
You can find the homework on School 360 > Resources > Busy Things > My Assignments

Edit: A few people have told me that they're having problems accessing this homework as it's asking for a class code. If that's the case, don't worry about it and I'll do some investigating to find out what the problem is!

Thanks,
Mr J

Homework
Tuesday 7th February was Safer Internet Day. For homework this week, I would like your child to make ANYTHING that highlights how to stay safe online. They can make a poster, write a poem, create a board game, record a song, write a story, film a video...it's up to them! We will using the homework as part of a display in school, so please take your time and make it . Songs and videos can be included in our display too, if that's what you decide to do!

 Ideas for discussion:

  • What did they learn from the story of Hanni & the Magic Window?
  • What did they learn from the story of Penguin Pig?
  • Can they remember SID's Top Tips?
  • How could we make the Internet a better place?
The leaflet below gives lots more information, including a list of SID's Top Tips, the message we learnt from Penguin Pig and a bit of insight for parents as to who these characters actually are! You can also find a copy of Hanni & the Magic Window to download or you can read it online by clicking here.

As this homework might take a little more time than usual, I've given the children two weeks to complete it. If they could bring it in after half term, that would be great.

Thanks,
Mr J

All of the information and questions can be found in our online classroom. There are also some links to video reminders, in case you need them. You can complete the homework by typing straight into the document or, if you'd prefer, you can complete it on paper and hand it in.

Thanks,

You should all have a sheet so you can practise at home. Don't worry if you've lost it or need another copy - you can either ask me for another one or download it below.

  • Click on Classroom.
  • Click on Beech Class 2022-2023.
When you're there, please complete the Addition Quiz:

Homework

This half term, we will be learning about some famous polar explorers. Some of them explored the Arctic, some of them the Antarctic and some explored both!

If you were an explorer, where would you choose to explore? Why?

You could choose anywhere you like - it doesn't have to be a polar region. Maybe you fancy a trip to a desert? Or space? It's up to you!

Draw and label the things you would take with you on your exploration. You can even draw a picture of yourself dressed for the adventure, if you like!

You should all have a sheet to complete your homework on. Don't worry if you've lost it, you can either download it below or do it on a blank piece of paper.

Thanks!

Mr J
