Woodhorn trip

We had a wonderful day at Woodhorn Colliery.

We took part in three different workshops.

We explored old maps and used coloured Lego bricks to shop all the different aspects within the community including hospitals, churches and schools.

We also explored the 'Pitmen Painters', a beautiful gallery of paintings that were all painted by Ashington miners and learnt more about life as a miner including what Ashington used to look like and how they decorated houses at Christmas.

We explored the original mining buildings at Woodhorn, including the mine shaft, the fan house and the Jack Engine house.

Finally, we explored the Pit Village in the museum. Here we learned about the Miner's Strike and the effect it had on the miners in Northumberland. We were also able to get dressed up as miners and enter a replica mine. We couldn't believe how tight the space that the miners worked in was.
