Home Learning Autumn Term

QUICK REQUEST: Could parents check jumpers/cardigans/hoodies for names please. We've had a couple go missing this week and it's easy for the children to pick the wrong one up! Thanks!

Homework
This week, I'd like you to interview an adult in your family (a parent or grandparent would be ideal) about when they were at school. See if you can find any similarities and differences between their time at school and what school is like for you now.
You should all have a letter which you can show your adult. You can use the questions in the letter to help you, you can think of some of your own or you can just ask your grown up to share their memories - whatever works best for you. It's up to you how you share what you found out in your interview - you can write answers down, email them or maybe even record them. You can also interview more than one grown up, if you'd like to! Finally, if your grown ups have any photos or memorabilia of their time at school that they are happy to share, that would be amazing.

Note for parents/grandparents: If any of you came to Swansfield Park (or Alnwick South, as it was known back then) and are feeling brave, we would love to record a short video interview with you and some of the children. Please let us know if you are interested!

Thank!
Mr J

Homework
We've been learning that addition and subtraction are opposites. This means that when we know one fact, we also know three more without having to do any calculating. For example, if we know 16 + 3 = 19 we also know 3 + 16 = 1919 - 16 = 3 and 19 - 3 = 16. This is called a fact family.
I'd like you to think of an addition/subtraction fact family. Now see if you can make a house for your fact family to live in. You could make a gingerbread house, a lift-the-flap house, a haunted house or even a 3D house. You can make as many as you like! Here are some ideas for you:

Homework
Remember, remember the 5th of November...
For your homework, I would like you to find out about a famous person from history called Guy Fawkes. It's up to you how you share what you have found out - you might make a poster or a leaflet, record a video or a song, create a poem or a comic strip...you choose! We'll be sharing your findings on Tuesday 5th November.
You can bring your work into school or, if you'd prefer, send a copy of it to andrew.johnson@school360.co.uk.

Thanks!

Homework
This week, I'd like you to practise your ten times table. I'd like you to practise saying the whole number sentence, rather than just counting in tens (for example, you can say 'one times ten is ten' or 'one ten is ten').
1 x 10 = 10
2 x 10 = 20
3 x 10 = 30
4 x 10 = 40
5 x 10 = 50
6 x 10 = 60
7 x 10 = 70
8 x 10 = 80
9 x 10 = 90
10 x 10 = 100
11 x 10 = 110
12 x 10 = 120
You can practise in any way that works for you.
  • You could chant them (one ten is ten, two tens are twenty...).
  • You could sing them (Numberblocks - Heroes with Zeroes or Twinkl - Magic Ten Times Table)
  • You could write them out.
  • You could play games to practise them, such as Times Table Rockstars (it should be set to just 10x for this week) or J2Blast (School 360 > Resources > J2E > J2Blast; you will need to choose Level 3 to get 10x questions).
You don't need to hand anything in, but next Friday we will be doing our first ever FULL TTRockstars session. Get ready to ROCK!

Thanks!

Homework
In Geography this term, we have been learning about and creating maps. In our next Geography lesson (THURSDAY), we're going to be making sketch maps of our journeys to school. To help you with this, your homework is to have a good look at the buildings, features and places that you pass on your way to school. Talk about what you can see with your grown ups and pay close attention to your route. You don't need to write anything down or hand anything in, but you can make a note of things if it will help you when you come to make your map in school.

Thanks,
Mr J

Homework
Who is your favourite author? For your homework, I'd like you to tell me about them.
Here are some questions to think about:
Who is you favourite author?
Why are they your favourite author?
What books have they written?
Which of their books is your favourite and why?
It's your choice how you tell me about your favourite author. You could write about them, create a poster about them or even record a video of you talking about them! Try to give as much information as you can.
You can bring your work into school or send it digitally (with your grown up) via e-mail - whatever is easiest.

Thanks!

Homework
This week's homework is a short written homework. I would like you to think of three people who you admire (they can be real or fictional, but at least one has to be real) and give a reason why.

For example:
I admire my Mam for always giving excellent advice.
I admire my Dad for being a D.I.Y. master - he can make or fix almost anything!
I admire Han Solo for being rebellious but making the right choices in the end.

You can write your sentences down and bring them in, or you could ask a grown up to help you e-mail them to me if that's easier.
We'll be sharing your choices with the class on Friday 27th September.

Thanks,
Mr J

Homework
In the Traction Man stories that we've been reading, Traction Man's enemies are everyday household objects. Here are some of them - Wicked Professor Spade, The Poisonous Dishcloth and The Broom:
For your homework this week, I’d like you to create your own villain using an everyday household object. You can use anything you like (a vacuum cleaner, a sock, a scooter, a pan…) but check with your grown up first! Add whatever you need to them (drawings, buttons, feathers, googly eyes…) to turn them into a character. You’ll need to think of an awesome name and also write a short description. I chose some scissors and used paper and some Blu-Tack to turn them into The Evil Scissor Shark! Here’s my description: The Evil Scissor Shark likes to prowl the blue carpet looking for paper to snip into tiny pieces. Watch out, he’s got a sharp bite!
Here are two more examples - The Sinister Spoon and the one we made in class together, The Suspicious Spider Plant!
Please ask your grown-up to help you take a picture of your villain and send it to andrew.johnson@school360.co.uk by Friday 30th September. You can either add your writing to your photo, type it into the e-mail or bring it in on some paper. We’ll be using our villains as inspiration for some of our writing in class!

Note for parents: I've also sent a paper copy of the homework home this week until we get into the routine!

Have fun!

Mr J
