Head Teacher's Blog 07.05.24
5th May 2024
I do hope that everyone is enjoying the early May Bank Holiday weekend - it always feels like a real treat with an extra day off still ahead of us!
We finished our Fun With Numbers sessions last week with our Y4s showcasing their learning and skills to their families. Thank you to everyone who has engaged with these sessions. I do hope that coming along and working with us has given you a valuable insight into how the maths curriculum is taught and most importantly, the role that you can play in supporting your child to develop not only the skill of a mathematician but also a curiosity to enjoy working mathematically. It goes without saying that if you have any questions or queries that you thought about after your session, please do get in touch with class teachers who will be happy to support you further. Given the success of the Fun with Numbers format and the high ‘take up’ from families, we will look to offer similar sessions in the near future for different areas of the curriculum. I would like to say a very big thank you to Mrs Murdy, our school maths lead, for being the driving force behind these sessions, to Mr Fordham-Scott for providing such a warm welcome to families each week and to all of the class teachers who put time and care into planning and delivering such interactive and useful learning opportunities.
Mr Warburton was grateful to all who came along to the Y4 Ford Castle residential meeting last week. Copies of all of the resources are available on the school website under the Y4 residential tab.
Thank you to everyone who has taken the time to respond to the consultation materials sent out. If you haven’t already done so, please can I urge you to get involved. It is important that we hear everyone’s voice during this process. Can I also remind you that we will be holding a consultation meeting on May 16th at 17.30 in the school hall.
As communicated earlier this week, we need to make an amendment to the lunch menu on Tuesday. Please ensure that you have followed the communication sent to ensure that your child receives their preferred lunch option.
On Friday, our friends in Beech and Sycamore classes, along with members of our senior ceilidh band, had the opportunity to join with peers from St Michael’s Primary school to participate in workshops led by The joyful Company of Singers, one of the country’s leading amateur choirs, who were at the beginning of a weekend long tour of Northumberland. The workshops celebrated our musical heritage with exploration of some of our most famous folk songs, such as Dance ti thy Daddy, The Keel Row and Bobby Shaftoe. As well as singing these wonderful tunes, there was lots of opportunity to improvise with sounds and enjoy the collaborative experience of making music. Many thanks to Margaret Green from the Joyful Company of Singers for leading such interesting sessions for our children. We’ll get some photos up on the website early in the week.
Let’s take a look at the week ahead:

Children attending these sessions must be accompanied by an adult. Year 4, 5 and 6 children are invited to attend between 18.30 and 19.30. Let’s share some great news - we’ve got some super stars of the week to tell you about! A huge well done to: Orla Groves, Scott Pearce, Amelia Howard, Greyson Lowrey, Harlee Coxford, Jack Gray, Wilfred Patten, Sophia Pearce, Millie Baty, Ollie Laycock and Alex Drinnen. We are proud of you all!
In a final piece of good news, we heard last week that Sycamore class won a ‘spot prize’ in the AtkinsRealis competition that they entered to plan a school based project to support net zero carbon emissions. The children are now planning how to spend their £150 on something environmentally friendly for our school. Well done Sycamores!
In celebration of May the 4th last week, let’s have some music from Star Wars. I do hope ‘the force’ is with you all this week.
