UPDATED - BUSY THINGS Learning Week 7 and Photo Gallery: 18th of May - 25th of May

Home Learning for 18th of May - 1st of June

Hi everybody,
Hope you are all well and welcome to our next learning page. This will keep everyone busy until June the 1st and as an added extra we have a school art competition ( see details below) which has a closing date of June the 3rd. The art competition is something I am very excited about so I hope some of the outlined ideas will inspire you to take part!
Continuing on the 'art' theme, a parent has passed on Tiddly Painters which you can find online. I have already seen some very impressive works of art from friends in our class. Tiddly Painters is run by an artist from Morpeth and she does live  art lesson streams through the day for children.
As always, I want to say another big 'thank you' to everybody in your ongoing efforts to maintain learning at home. Your efforts are much appreciated and again, don't feel you have to complete every single activity. I fully understand that some of you are juggling work and home learning at the same time so it is sometimes tricky to give your child the support with their learning. However, some activities enable children to get on fairly independently and even if you haven't managed to get the 'email' tasks done, just keep me posted with what you have managed to do. However, I continue to receive an influx of work each week. This keeps me very busy as well as very entertained at times! Paper based work packs are going to be provided which tie in with each week's learning. Staff are organising these in school this week and you will all be contacted with details on how and when to collect these from school.
Just to let you know, I am in school from Wednesday afternoon onwards so forgive me if I don't respond to emails as quickly as usual.
Hope you all stay well, busy and positive over the next fortnight.

**BUSY THINGS
TAKE A LOOK AT 'BUSY THINGS' WHICH YOU CAN FIND IN 'RESOURCES'. LOADS OF FANTASTIC ACTIVITIES ACROSS THE CURRICULUM. WE WILL BE USING THIS AS PART OF OUR LEARNING AFTER THE HALF TERM.

Swansfield Park Primary School Art Competition

With our annual art competition, Alnwick in Bloom, being cancelled until next year, I thought we might have our own school competition to keep us busy over what would be May Half Term. Take a look at the competition overview which is attached below for all the details you need!

 MATHS

ACTIVITY 1:

This week's first maths activity takes us to our last piece of work on 'Statistics'. The worksheet below is all about 'Tables'. All your data this week is shown as numbers but once again you will need to read the questions carefully and think about some of the vocabulary which is used. For some questions you will need to explain the reason for your answer.

ACTIVITY 2:

@EMAIL THIS ACTIVITY TO ME SO I CAN SEE HOW YOU'RE MANAGING WITH MONEY!

This activity moves us straight on to our maths unit of 'Money'. We are beginning with 'Pounds and Pence'. To begin with, it might be a good idea to look at some real money. Familiarise yourself with the value of each coin, note or both. Look at the shape of each coin too. Remember, even though you are working with money, you are still just adding numbers together. This week, we are not using a decimal point to separate pounds and pence but recording pounds and pence as separate amounts. For example, where there is more than £1, add the pounds together first and then the amount in pence. You will need to know that there are 100 pennies in £1.

100p = £1

ACTIVITY 3:

Complete your next 'Big Maths' Worksheet. If you have any queries about any of the questions, just email me and I can help out. A new page has been set up entitled BIG MATHS WORKSHEETS in case you need more.

ACTIVITY 4:

This week, complete another Times Tables Rockstars sheet but even better...jump on to the Times Tables Rockstars website where you can practise online and complete the 10 Garage Bands Sessions. If you are coming to an end with the worksheets, let me know and I can attach some more to the learning page. At the end of the week, I'll look to see who has been on Rockstars and give more school 360 points out.

ACTIVITY 5:

Complete 2 pages from your Schoffield and Simms maths booklet. Again, if you need any help with any of the questions or challenges within the book, just email and I’m happy to help.

ACTIVITY 1:

READING ACTIVITY:

Reading is such an important life skill so it's crucial to set some time aside in your day to enjoy reading; whether it be by yourself, with an adult, your dog or even reading to a favourite cuddly toy! Reading can take so many forms - magazines, comics, newspapers, recipes, stories, non-fiction books... the list could go on! Listening to stories can be great fun too. I've been listening to more stories on 'Elevenses with the World of David Walliams'. As well as building up reading fluency, reading can help us learn more about the world we live in, stories take us to different places and imaginary worlds and what’s more...reading makes you an even better writer!

This reading activity is based on whatever story book you are reading at the minute or have read recently. Choose one activity, two or all three. Feel free to send any of it to me.

DRAW 5 THOUGHT BUBBLES AND WRITE WHAT THE MAIN CHARACTER MIGHT BE THINKING AT DIFFERENT STAGES IN THE STORY. I WONDER HOW THE CHARACTER'S THOUGHTS MIGHT CHANGE?

DRAW A LARGE PICTURE OF ONE OF THE SETTINGS USED IN THE BOOK. LABEL EVERYTHING IN THE PICTURE USING WORDS AND PHRASES FROM THE BOOK.

NON-FICTION - WRITE DOWN ALL THE FACTS YOU HAVE LEARNT FROM READING THIS TEXT. YOU COULD CREATE A POSTER FROM THE FACTS OR USE GOOGLE SLIDES. THINK OF A CREATIVE WAY TO RECORD WHAT YOU HAVE FOUND OUT.

ACTIVITY 2:

This week’s spelling, punctuation and grammar focus is 'Identifying and using verbs'. First read the snippet of text 'The distant ship' and then decide which activity sheet you are going to complete. The sheets range in the amount of support they give but the challenge you choose is up to you.

ACTIVITY 3:

Spellings: Think about the spelling group you were in when at school. These are the spellings you are focusing on this week. As well as doing the 'look, say, cover, write, approach', why not write them in different colours, in different letter styles (wobbly, bubble), small letters, big letter or why not time yourself to see how quickly you can write them all or how many times you can write one word in 30 seconds!

Set 1 Spelling Rule

A

The prefix ‘in’ usually means ‘not’.  It will give the root word the opposite meaning.

B

When added to a root word starting with ‘l’, ‘in’ becomes ‘il’ giving a double ‘l’ (ll).

C

When added to a root word starting with ‘r’, ‘in’ becomes ‘ir’ giving a double ‘r’ (rr).

Set 2 Spelling Rule

A

The apostrophe represents missing letters and not the joining of two words (e.g. I have / I’ve).

B

The apostrophe replaces missing letters and must be placed precisely (e.g. I would / I’d).

C

Contractions show how we speak and should be used within speech marks.

Set 3 Spelling pattern: 'igh'

Activity 4:

@EMAIL THIS TO ME SO I CAN READ YOUR ARGUMENTS.

For this writing activity you will need your points 'for' and 'against' the use of plastics. I read some strong points both 'for' and 'against' last week and it was good to see that you used the Plastics Comprehension but also used your own research and knowledge. You are now going to use your points to build an argument about plastics and whether or not plastic should be banned. I have written the introduction for you but feel free to write your own if you prefer. To begin, you are going to make an argument 'for' the continued use of plastic followed by an argument 'against' the use of plastic. You will do the same again, using the sentence starters provided and conclude by saying what you think should happen. Do you think plastics should be banned? Remember to always give reasons for each point by using words such as 'because' to extend your sentences. I have attached a word mat which gives you a wide range of words you can use in your writing and there is a checklist at the bottom of the writing sheet so you can check for certain writing features.

Activity 5:

CRAFT WITH PLASTIC!

No matter what you decide as the conclusion to your argument on plastics, we can all recycle and reuse. Have a go at crafting with plastic. There are loads of ideas on the internet but I've added two of them here for you to look at. I love these little plastic yoghurt pot turtles and the animal themed bottles would make great storage for paintbrushes or pencils!

Whatever you make, tell me all about it. How did you make it? What will you use it for? Does it have a name? Where are you going to keep it?

Have fun!!

 SCIENCE

This week's science focus is 'heating and cooling'. Below is a great bbc bitesize clip which explains how you can change the state of a substance through heating or cooling and touches on reversible changes. For example, heat will melt an ice cube but we can freeze it to make ice again. Also attached is a powerpoint for you to read through and then an experiment for you to carry out. The experiment activity sheet is attached below too. For this experiment you will need three small foil tins or little foil boats and three bowls of water. One filled with cool water, one with warm water and another with hot water. PLEASE CARRY OUT THIS EXPERIMENT WITH AN ADULT. Once you have your water, place your tin foil boat or tray in each bowl and then place a square of chocolate or butter in each tray. Make a prediction as to which piece of chocolate or butter you think will melt first. What is the reason for your prediction? See if you can time how quickly it takes for each square of chocolate to melt. record your results on the activity sheet.

https://www.bbc.co.uk/bitesize/topics/zrssgk7/articles/z2cq2hv

After the experiment, perhaps you might melt some more chocolate and dip some marshmallows in or chopped fruit!

I look forward to seeing your work! Stay well and keep smiling : )
