Hello again and welcome to this week's home learning. I hope everyone remains well and that you were all able to enjoy any VE Day Celebrations in your homes and gardens. I received some fantastic photographs last week of the work children have been doing as well as VE Day bunting, baking, posters etc. The work you are putting in (and appear to be enjoying at times too!) is so much appreciated. Even though we are not in the school classroom learning together, you are putting the effort in to working together as families and all this effort keeps your children’s progress up and keeps their brains busy ready for when we do return to school. It’s lovely to see we are all making the most of other things we can do as well such as jigsaws, cake making, walking, DIY etc. All important in keeping our mental and physical health as strong as it can be and bringing families closer together as well. You can share each other’s photos by looking on the weekly learning pages and the ‘Willow wonders..?’ page too. Well done to everyone and School 360 points are building up on your individual avatars in return.

Once again, can I say that doing something from the home learning page is better than nothing. Please don’t feel you have to get every single thing done and remember a lot of the activities don’t need printed out. Recording in your own way is fine. I am grateful for the time you are taking to reply to weekly tasks and respond to emails as it just puts my mind at rest that all is well and that you are able to access school learning.

Again, I have marked the tasks which I would like emailed with a @ AND A MESSAGE

Stay well and keep smiling everyone : )

MATHS

ACTIVITY 1:

This week’s ‘Statistics’ activity is on bar charts. You will need to look at the data carefully and answer questions related to the charts, thinking carefully about vocabulary such as ‘most popular’, ‘least popular, and ‘How many more…?’ You’ll also get to look at a tally chart and a pictogram. You are asked to take the data from these charts and represent it as a bar chart. Don’t feel you have to do this with both. The worksheet you need is below.

ACTIVITY 2:

@EMAIL THIS WORK TO ME SO I CAN SEE YOUR BRILLIANT BAR CHARTS!

Now put what you have learned into practise! Last week you created a pictogram. Can you take the information from your pictogram and represent it as a bar chart? If you don’t want to use last week’s pictogram, have a go at putting a new set of data into the form of a bar chart. It could be made up data such as a bar chart to show the favourite sports or colours of Willow Class. There are 34 children in our class.

ACTIVITY 3:

Complete your next 'Big Maths' Worksheet. If you have any queries about any of the questions, just email me and I can help out. A new page has been set up entitled BIG MATHS WORKSHEETS in case you need more.

ACTIVITY 4:

Well done to those of you who had a go at defeating Chestnut Class in our Times Tables Rockstars Tournament. Sadly, Chestnut Class won but our score certainly rocketed up through the week with some fantastic individual achievements so well done everyone who took part and I will make sure that School 360 points are added to your avatars. This week, complete another Times Tables Rockstars sheet but even better...jump on to the Times Tables Rockstars website where you can practise online and complete the 10 Garage Bands Sessions. If you are coming to an end with the worksheets, let me know and I can attach some more to the learning page. At the end of the week, I'll look to see who has been on Rockstars and give more  school 360 points out.

ACTIVITY 5:

Complete 2 pages from your Schoffield and Simms maths booklet. Again, if you need any help with any of the questions or challenges within the book, just email and I’m happy to help.

ENGLISH

ACTIVITY 1:

Our next unit of work in English is going to be ‘Persuasive and Information Texts’. We are going to start by taking a look at a type of persuasive text: arguments. To start us off, I have attached a reading comprehension all about Plastic Pollution for you to complete. The reading comprehension has the usual text to read and then questions to answer. You don’t have to print either of these off, you can just pop your answers onto a piece of paper but remember to write your answers in full sentences! There are 3 different reading comprehensions in the file attached, ranging from 1 star to 3 stars. You will notice that they increase in difficulty. I would like you to challenge yourself and pick which comprehension you would like to complete. There are also answer sheets so you or someone at home can check your answers once you have finished.

ACTIVITY 2:

@ EMAIL THIS TO ME SO I CAN READ YOUR ARGUMENTS ‘FOR’ AND ‘AGAINST’ THE USE OF PLASTIC.

Following on from the comprehension on Plastic Pollution, I would like you to think of reasons for and against plastic use. ‘For’ arguments are reasons why we should have plastic and use it in our everyday lives and ‘against’ arguments are reasons why we should not have plastic. Can you think of at least 6 reasons for each? I have attached an example of a table that you could use to structure your work. Again, you don’t need to print it off, just create your own on a piece of paper. Remember to write in full sentences with lots of detail and explanation about each point.

ACTIVITY 3:

READING ACTIVITY:

Reading is such an important life skill so it's crucial to set some time aside in your day to enjoy reading; whether it be by yourself, with an adult, your dog or even reading to a favourite cuddly toy! Reading can take so many forms - magazines, comics, newspapers, recipes, stories, non-fiction books... the list could go on! Listening to stories can be great fun too. I've been listening to more stories on 'Elevenses with the World of David Walliams'. As well as building up reading fluency, reading can help us learn more about the world we live in, stories take us to different places and imaginary worlds and what’s more...reading makes you an even better writer!

This reading activity is based on whatever story book you are reading at the minute or have read recently. Choose all, two or one of the activities.

WHICH CHARACTER FROM YOUR BOOK WOULD YOU MOST LIKE TO BE? EXPLAIN YOUR ANSWER.

MAKE A TIMELINE OF THE IMPORTANT EVENTS IN THE STORY. USE WRITING AND PICTURES.

DESIGN A NEW FRONT COVER FOR YOUR BOOK.DON’T FORGET THE TITLE AND AUTHOR!

ACTIVITY 4:

This week’s spelling, punctuation and grammar focus is ‘contractions’. Attached below is a text called ‘The Chase’ which involves Mr P and his crew. Willow class are familiar with the characters in the text and the layout of the activity sheets as we did use them a few times before school closure. Remember, contracted words are short words made by putting two words together. Some of the letters are taken out and replaced with an apostrophe. The apostrophe shows where the letters would be if the words were written in full.

For example:

do not = don’t

I will = I’ll

Following the text are 3 different activity sheets. Don’t do all three of them, choose which one is best for you.

The above link has a good ‘contractions’ activity clip and a quiz to follow.

ACTIVITY 5:

Spellings: Think about the spelling group you were in when at school. These are the spellings you are focusing on this week. As well as doing the 'look, say, cover, write, approach', why not write them in different colours, in different letter styles (wobbly, bubble), small letters, big letter or why not time yourself to see how quickly you can write them all or how many times you can write one word in 30 seconds!

SCIENCE

This week we are returning to our Science topic ‘States of Matter’ and our focus is comparing gases. You are going to investigate the weight of Carbon Dioxide by experimenting with some fizzy drinks. Attached is a powerpoint which will take you through some of the properties of gas and its uses. The interactive parts of the powerpoint won’t work but you will learn a lot from the information. Below is a link to a BBC Bitesize clip called ‘Does gas weigh anything? Read through the powerpoint and watch the clip before carrying out your experiment. If you can only get a hold of one bottle of fizzy drink then just carry out the experiment with that to see the difference in weight.

As an added extra, this link will take you to an experiment for making your own fizzy drink with a lemon, water, baking soda and sugar.

I look forward to seeing your work!
