Rowan Class - 47,459
Come on, we can still beat them... Team Larch can do this... Good luck everyone!

Hi Larch Class!

I hope you all enjoyed your weekend and remembered to get some exercise and fresh air. I know some of you are starting to find this way of working and living a little tricky, and even frustrating at times, but it really is for the best. We all need to stay safe and strong for a little bit longer.

Mrs O’Connell and I continue to be most impressed with the work that we receive each week and we can see that you are progressing well. It is so important that each and every one of you continue to complete the tasks set in the weekly blog as well as submit those that are requested each week as we really don’t want gaps to start appearing in your knowledge and understanding.

Last week’s ‘Star of the Week’ certificate was awarded to Thomas to acknowledge the many pieces of high quality work that he has submitted since our school closure, I’ve been so impressed! Keep up the good work Thomas, I hope you’ve received your certificate and School360 points. Who might it be this week I wonder?

Another piece of exciting news for those of you that haven’t already seen Mrs Smith’s weekly blog... Mrs Rutherford and her husband welcomed Baby Willow into the world last week! As Mrs Rutherford now begins the journey of sleepless nights and changing nappies, we are welcoming Mr Chris Rose to the Upper Key Stage 2 team. I’m sure you’ve all seen Mr Rose around school, some of you have even been lucky enough to have Mr Rose teaching you. He has already been using his expert knowledge of WWII to create some very exciting Home Learning tasks.

This week’s Home Learning tasks continue to follow a similar structure to those set in previous weeks. For English, there is a selection of reading and writing challenges based upon some more ‘Poetry’ as well as a set of spellings to learn. For Maths, you have arithmetic, Big Maths, a few challenges focusing upon ‘Angles’ as well as a VERY important job on TTRS. This week, Rowan Class have challenged us to a ‘Battle of the Bands’ Competition. They really do believe that they can beat us and be crowned TTRS Champions! Let’s show them who the real champions are Larch Class... Let the battle commence!!!!!

In addition to this, I have set you a couple of Science activities about ‘Fossils’’ and suggested some creative ways for joining the celebrations of the 75th anniversary of VE Day on Friday.

Remember, if you need help with ANY of your Home Learning tasks or have ANY queries, just send myself or Mrs O’Connell an email using your school360 email account. We do enjoy hearing from you and we are always here to help!

Work to submit this week:

This week we would like you to submit your Fossils Information Booklet (Science) and your Animal Poem by Monday 11th May. We will then provide each of you with some personal feedback. Please send your Science to Mrs Murdy and your English to Mrs O’Connell, where possible, using your School360 email address.

Ok, so the details for your Home Learning Tasks this week Larch Class are as follows...

English (From Mrs O’Connell) - Year 5 and Year 6 are doing the same work this week.

Poetry Unit: This week you are going to be investigating some different poems and then producing your own poem about an animal, using word banks. You need to complete the lessons in the following order, they have been numbered to help you:

1)    The Brook

2)    A Case of Murder

If possible, print off the ‘Poems’ sheet (attached) so you can highlight and write on it, if not however, it is absolutely fine to discuss your answers with someone in your family or record your answers on a blank piece of paper. You then just need to follow the PowerPoints through as they talk you through each poem and give you tasks to complete. They should be fairly straightforward but please do email Mrs O’Connell if you have any problems or questions.

Year 5 & 6 Writing Task: This week you need to have a look through the animal word banks and choose one of them to use to help you write a poem. You must use all of the words in your chosen word bank at some point in your poem, the idea is that it helps to get you started with writing your poem. For example, if you choose the crocodile word bank, you would have the following words:

Crocodile

Slithers

Growls

Scales

Jaws

Teeth

Flickering

Ground

Lurking

Glides

Head

Strike

Seize

Deadly

Rough

So your opening line could be:  The deadly crocodile sits on the river bank, waiting for its prey…

The idea is that you use the words as part of your poem about your chosen animal, you can use the words more than once if you need to and not every line in your poem has to contain one of your given words. However, by the end of your poem, you must have used all of the words. I would like your poems to be beautifully presented, as creatively as you can!  – Please email this task to Mrs O’Connell by 11.05.20.

Year 5 & 6 Spellings: Please look up the definitions of the following words and then write a sentence using each word, correctly and in context:

Convenience

Correspond

Criticise

Curiosity

Definite

Desperate

Determined

Develop

It would be great if someone could then test you on your spellings each week. Remember to keep a record of your scores and challenge yourself to do the best you can!

Maths (From Mrs Murdy):

This week, lets focus on Angles

Before you complete the independent activities that I have set for you, I would like you to work your way through the relevant Maths PowerPoints attached at the bottom of this blog. The PowerPoints have also been saved as pdf documents should you require this format. These resources are just like the inputs that we would complete together as a whole class in our Maths lessons, starting with a ‘Warm Up Challenge’ followed by some information slides, key questions and finally the details of your independent tasks.

I’m more than happy for you to work through the Maths PowerPoints and record your answers on a piece of paper or even discuss them with someone in your family. You don’t have to print them.

I have also uploaded two Knowledge Organiser Mats all about ‘Angles’ to support you with your independent work (see attached).

Year 5 / Most of Bees

You don’t have any pages to complete in your photocopied maths booklet this week. Once you have worked through the ‘warm-up’ challenges and ‘teacher input’ slides in each of the two PowerPoints, you’ll find the questions for your independent tasks at the end of each of the PowerPoints. Please record your answers to these questions on a piece of paper.

In addition to the two PowerPoint lessons on angles, I would also like you to do the following Maths tasks:

- Big Maths: Skills Check 5 (one side)

- Arithmetic Booklet: 3rd page in booklet (first side) / Qs 1 to 20 (Q1: 36+94)

- Times Table Rock Stars: Battle of the Bands – Rowan Vs Larch!!!

Year 6 / Beetles

- Maths Booklet: (Photocopied booklet titled ‘Maths Assessment’)

Once you have worked through the three PowerPoints and recorded your answers to the questions within these PowerPoints on a piece of paper, I would like you to turn to the 10th and 11th page in your Maths Booklet and complete the three sides containing questions on angles, area and properties of a circle.

In addition to the three PowerPoint lessons, I would also like you to do the following Maths tasks:

- Big Maths: Skills Check 5 (one side)

- Arithmetic Booklet: 3rd page in booklet (first side - titled: ‘Test 20’) / Qs 1 to 19 (Q1: 497+10)

- Times Table Rock Stars: Battle of the Bands – Rowan Vs Larch!!!

Science (From Mrs Murdy): Fossils

Following on from our work on Evolution and Adaptation, we are now going to explore Fossils. We will look at how living things have changed over time as well as how fossils can provide us with information about living things that inhabited the Earth millions of years ago.

Please begin your Science task by looking through and carefully reading both the ‘Science - Fossils’ PowerPoint as well as the ‘Fossil Facts Poster’ (see attached resources at bottom of page). You could also watch the following Bitesize videos if you’d like a little giggle:

How are fossils made: https://www.bbc.co.uk/bitesize/topics/z9bbkqt/articles/z2ym2p3

What can we learn from fossils: https://www.bbc.co.uk/bitesize/topics/z9bbkqt/articles/z22g7p3

Once you’ve done this, it’s now time to show me what you ‘really’ know about fossils by completing the two independent challenges below:

  1. Create your own timeline of the fossilisation process using pictures and text to clearly explain, step by step how fossils are made.
  2. Create a general information booklet titled ‘Fascinating Fossils...’. Use your understanding of everything that you’ve read to make the most informative guide that you can. Can you include any information about fossils found within Northumberland? Remember to make it appealing to the reader as well as easy to follow – Please email this task to Mrs Murdy by 11.05.20.

Optional Extra: Can you make your own fossil?

VE Day (From Mrs Murdy): Let’s celebrate and turn our houses red, white and blue

VE Day (Victory in Europe Day) is the day on which Allied forces formally announced the surrender of Germany, which brought the Second World War to a close in Europe. The Royal British Legion are calling on the nation to help mark the 75th anniversary of VE Day from their homes this Friday by decorating them red, white and blue. Why not take part in this special event by:

- Creating and displaying some bunting

- Designing and displaying a flag or even a celebratory poster

- Planning and helping to make a family picnic

- Finding some WWII recipes and making a cake for an afternoon tea celebration

- any of your other fabulous ideas...

Find out a little bit more about VE Day by reading the attached PowerPoint and watching the following video link, then get planning and decorating Larch Class... Have fun and remember to send me some photographs of how you and your family are celebrating this special day.

There is also a VE Day Morse Code Challenge attached if you would like to give it a go... Something a little bit different to keep those clever brains busy!
